Who Gets Protected? Climate Justice and Environmental Decision-Making in the Global South

Description: Climate change does not affect all communities equally, nor do climate policies always benefit everyone in the same way. While global climate commitments continue to expand, many vulnerable communities in the Global South remain disproportionately exposed to environmental harms despite contributing the least to the climate crisis. This workshop explores how climate justice can inform more equitable and inclusive environmental decision-making.
Drawing on examples from Southeast Asia and other developing regions, participants will examine how questions of equity, representation, human rights, and access to decision-making shape climate governance outcomes. The session will encourage critical reflection on who is included in environmental policymaking, whose interests are prioritized, and how policymakers can better incorporate justice considerations into climate action.
Through interactive discussion and case studies, participants will explore practical approaches to advancing climate justice and strengthening the participation of underrepresented communities in environmental governance and policy processes.
