Description: Professor Emily Shuckburgh CBE, Chief Scientific Advisor (DESNZ) will reflect on her career in climate science and the path that led her into policy work. Drawing on her experience in academia, polar research and government, she will explore how scientific training can support effective policymaking, particularly when decisions involve complex evidence, competing priorities and uncertainty. The conversation will consider how her academic background has shaped her approach to public service, the opportunities and challenges of translating research into policy, and the different ways scientists can contribute to government. She will also discuss how, in her current role, she works to strengthen connections between academia and public institutions, helping policymakers access trusted expertise while encouraging researchers to engage with real-world policy questions.
