Description: SecondBite is a not-for-profit organization based in Melbourne, Australia dedicated to rescuing and redistributing surplus food to vulnerable communities. Considering the increasing challenges posed by climate change, escalating global food insecurity, and significant supply chain disruptions, SecondBite plays a critically important role in the agribusiness supply chain. By examining its collaborative partnerships with farmers, supermarkets, and food producers, this case highlights how SecondBite’s innovative supply chain model transforms uncertainty and disruption into opportunities to support those in need. However, SecondBite faces considerable challenges, including logistical complexities, food perishability, financial sustainability, and reliance on the goodwill and philanthropy of donations and volunteer support. As the demand for food relief rises, the case encourages students to consider and devise strategic solutions that address SecondBite’s logistical, sustainability, and funding challenges, particularly focusing on uncertainties in agricultural production and the not-for-profit landscape. This case study encourages critical analysis and discussion on how social enterprises can collaborate with stakeholders to scale their impact while ensuring operational efficiency and resilience in combating food waste and insecurity.
