Description: Dr Kennedy Mbeva and Professor David Reiner will present case studies demonstrating how academic expertise can shape climate and energy policy. Dr Mbeva will examine how research on catastrophic climate risk, global governance and Africa’s development priorities informs UN assessments, international negotiations and national decision-making. Drawing on his experience with the IPCC, the Adaptation Gap Report and Kenya’s climate delegation, he will show how researchers can build credibility and influence multilateral processes. Professor Reiner will demonstrate how evidence, advisory work and stakeholder engagement support policy development on carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, carbon dioxide removal and industrial decarbonisation. His case study will highlight the importance of public acceptability, political feasibility and trusted relationships across government, industry and civil society. Together, the presentations will offer practical lessons on translating research into credible policy options, navigating institutional constraints, strengthening collaboration and advancing equitable, publicly supported pathways to climate resilience and net zero.
