Description: The rapid growth of artificial intelligence is increasing demand for data centres and the energy needed to power them, creating new challenges for climate policy.
The session examines the carbon and energy implications of these technologies and the policy levers available to governments, including efficiency standards, procurement, transparency and demand management. The session also explores another rapidly growing, energy-intensive area: decentralised finance and cryptocurrencies.
Participants will explore the Jevons Paradox and consider how policymakers can develop frameworks that encourage energy efficiency, on-site renewable generation and heat reuse, while ensuring that digital infrastructure supports national climate goals.
The session will provide practical insights into how governments can manage growing energy demand from digital technologies while supporting innovation and a sustainable digital transition.
