Description: On AI, the policy question is the fast-growing energy demand of data centres and the levers available to government — efficiency standards, procurement, transparency. Dr Karen Cripps (editor of ‘An organisational guide to skills for green workforce transformation’) will explore the carbon cost of AI and the energy demands driving policy debates. The session will move beyond simple efficiency and confront the ‘Jevons Paradox’ to discuss how policymakers can manage demand, ensure transparency, and create a framework for AI that is truly sustainable and serves the public interest. Participants will gain an understanding of how to create frameworks that drive demand management, incentivise on-site renewable generation and heat reuse, and ensure that data centre expansion contributes positively to national climate goals. Professor Jennifer S.A. Leigh will discuss another rapidly growing energy-intensive areas: Decentralized Finance & Cryptocurrencies.
