Description: The power sector is a major source of global greenhouse gas emissions and is central to the clean energy transition.
This session explores how governments can use policy and market mechanisms to accelerate renewable energy deployment, drawing on examples from India, Chile and Bangladesh.
Participants will examine how competitive renewable energy auctions can drive down costs through effective market design, with a focus on how auction design—not simply the size of subsidies—can influence outcomes. The session will also explore household solar in Bangladesh, including the role of government support and the challenges around grid capacity and energy storage.
The session highlights how governments can act as market designers, funders and enablers, providing practical insights into designing effective policies for a cleaner and more affordable energy system.
