SESSION 1 – Seeing the Invisible Traps: Using Systems Thinking to Diagnose Policy Delays and Unintended Consequences

Description: Introduces Systems Thinking through causal loop modelling (based on John Sterman’s work). Participants learn to identify reinforcing and balancing feedback loops using Loopy. The session examines the Jevons Paradox and systemic traps before moving into breakout teams to map behavioural feedback using the historical post-mortem case of Cape Town’s “Day Zero” Water Crisis.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- Evaluate policy interventions against non-linear behavioural economic feedbacks.
- Construct basic causal loop diagrams to model complex policy systems.
- Diagnose policy vulnerabilities and systemic delays, and rebound effects (such as Jevons Paradox) before implementation.
