Strengthening the Business Case for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) Climate Action

Building on the UN Climate Change High Level Champions’ Climate Proofing SMEs Campaign, and the Drivers, Enablers and Challenges identified in 2024 we are looking to collate current global academic expert knowledge, ahead of COP30 in Brazil, in response to:

  • How can governments best support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to address their emissions and climate risk exposure?

  • What climate mitigation and adaptation solutions (approaches and/or technologies) are proving cost effective or ineffective for SMEs?

Working in collaboration with the SME Climate Hub, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Oxford, we are looking for academics who are experts on SMEs and climate change to:

  1. Provide links to their existing research publications in this broad subject area and/or brief plain language summaries of their research.
  2. Engage in an online dialogue on this subject with colleagues across the globe (targeting October 2025, ahead of COP30).
  3. Potentially contribute to a high-level policy focused hybrid event at COP30 and inform conversations with the UN Climate Change High Level Champions, government and non-state-actor representatives.

The given time frame is short ahead of COP30 in November; the aims are as follows:

  • Networks will be developed from the dialogue through to the COP30 presentation and hopefully beyond.
  • The October online dialogue will set out questions, key issues, and evidence.
  • The presentation at COP30 will include a short, sharp summary in plain language with links to academic evidence (and translations).
  • The insights and findings gathered from this call will be used to guide the SME Climate Hub’s support activities for SMEs and advocate for the frameworks, resources, and incentives that best fit their needs – at COP30 and beyond.

We hope that academic contributions to this call will:

  • Further interlink experts and build dialogues between SMEs and academics locally and globally;
  • Further the subject area and improve the evidence base;
  • Consider how to act on academic insight and create impact;
  • Be conducted in an equitable and representative manner.
