CLIMATE PROOFING SMEs CAMPAIGN

November 2024

In support of the UNFCCC Climate-Proofing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) campaign, the International Universities Climate Alliance in collaboration with the Centre for Climate Engagement at Hughes Hall, and Cambridge Zero at the University of Cambridge worked with global partners and networks to discuss and document current academic insights.

There are substantial numbers of SMEs, who are under-resourced, and who have an important role to play if properly empowered.  Independent, credible, expert evidence is critical to understanding and can underpin effective climate proofing of small businesses.

Academic experts on SMEs and climate change engaged in an online discussion in October 2024 with insights collated to inform COP29 discussions between High Level Champions and key policy makers/party and Non-State-Actor representatives.

Video message to you, as experts working in the area of SMEs and climate change from Nigar Arparadai , the UN Climate Change High-Level Champion, COP29

“SMEs make up the majority of businesses globally and support the livelihood of billions of people. Therefore, they occupy a place at the frontline of the climate crisis. Universities already work closely with SMEs through their supply chains, education programs and community outreach. The Climate Proofing SMEs campaign provides a vital chance to mobilise the academic community in support of a net-zero future by creating new tools and opportunities to help SMEs respond to the climate challenge.”

— Professor Attila Brungs, Chair of the International Universities Climate Alliance
