For World Ozone Day, Tribhuvan University (Nepal) hosted a half-day workshop on “Ozone for Life; Role of Academia, Practitioners and Policy Makers” in association with the International Universities Climate Alliance.
The Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (CDHM) at Tribhuvan University, and the Student’s Organization of Meteorology (SOM), in association with the International Universities Climate Alliance (IUCA), jointly organized a half workshop entitled, “Ozone for life; Role of Academia, Practitioners and Policy Makers.”
The event was pioneered by esteemed panelists, from academia, the policy sector, and research institutes to discuss the critical issues of ozone layer protection, featuring distinguished speakers, Prof. Dr. Binil Aryal, the Dean of the Institute of Science and Technology (IoST), Tribhuvan University, Mr. Bishow Babu Pudasaini, the Secretary, with the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, Government of Nepal; Prof. Dr. Khem Poudyal, Professor at the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University; and Dr. Bhupesh Adhikary, Senior Scientist at ICIMOD.
The panel discussion was lively, with in-depth discussions about the roles of academia, practitioners, and governments in safeguarding the ozone layer. Each panelist shared unique insights on how their respective sectors can help protect the ozone layer and assure its preservation. To effectively address ozone depletion, the speakers emphasized the need to bridge the gap between scientific research, practical application, and policy making.
The discussion session was interactive, with students asking detailed questions to the panelists, which further enriched the debate. The workshop was successful in bridging the gap between policymakers, practitioners, and academics, fostering collaboration and a common understanding of ozone layer protection.
The event was chaired by Prof. Dr. Deepak Aryal, Head of the Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, and skillfully hosted by student representative Nistha Niraula. Overall, the workshop provided an invaluable space for stimulating discussion about ozone layer protection and the crucial roles of several sectors in this effort. At the end of the workshop the host and chair of the program recognised the role of both Prof. Binod Dawadi and the IUCA in having made this event possible.
