Carbon Forest is an interactive, browser-based visualisation of the carbon cycle at different stages of a Finnish forest’s rotation period. Developed at the University of Helsinki, it offers anyone interested in the topic an easy and illustrative way to explore how carbon moves through forests. Carbon Forest shows when forests act as carbon sinks, when they are carbon sources, and which kinds of forests make the best carbon stores.

The service also provides concise, easy-to-understand descriptions of the most common forest characteristics from the perspectives of both the carbon cycle and biodiversity.

Around forty percent of the world’s population already lives in a way that keeps their carbon footprint close to or in line with sufficiency. A University of Helsinki study suggests that climate policy could learn from their way of life, and that policy tools should be tailored to different income groups.

New research led by the University of Exeter warns that rising sea levels could “drown” mangroves, reducing their ability to store carbon and even turning them into carbon sources. The study highlights a hidden climate risk, showing how the loss of these vital coastal forests could accelerate global warming.
